New toys!

January 27, 2009

Yipee! I finally decided on doing the Chanel Cambon tote in black and white for the baby shower.  Now, its not your traditional diaper bag but if I were a mom I would definitely lug Huggies in this bag.  I’m really looking foward to using the embosser tool for the quilted effect.

I need to think of the baby toys that will accompany the tote so that everyone can tell its for a baby shower.  I’ve read that it’s best to use gumpaste for this.  I’ll have to practice tonight because I haven’t worked with gumpaste yet.  Although, I’m sure it’s very similar to fondant with a more clay like effect.

A baby shower cake pictures contest!

January 25, 2009

While I was looking for tips and ideas online for the baby shower cake I found a Baby Shower Cake Contest.  How cool is that?  The deadline is January 31, 2009.  It’s also the same day I’ll be completing the cake so hopefully I’ll have time to submit a pic.

Baby shower cake brainstorming

January 25, 2009

My sister is throwing a baby shower for a friend this weekend and has asked me to do a baby diaper bag cake.  She has also requested it to be either a LV, Coach or Chanel bag.  Well, I kind of put the idea in her head when I sent her a pic of an LV diaper bag cake that I saw online and jokingly said, “I bet I can make this!”.  So now I’m trying to muster up ideas on how to execute it including the cake flavor.

I’m disappointed

Chanel purse cakeHere is another designer purse cake that I spotted on the Real Housewives of Orange County Season 4.  Ok, I confess, I watch these shows but not until recently!  (Does that get me off the hook?)  Anywho, what is up with the “Channel” cake?  I mean, these ladies are super-uber filthy rich, I would think they could afford a more authentic looking  Chanel cake.  I’m just saying – if you can sport the bling, Rolexes, Benzes – at least get the cake right, too!

My second fondant cake

My god daughter Abby's birthday cake

My goddaughter Abby's birthday cake

I can probably go on and on about what I could have done differently but then that takes all the fun out of trying again!  Here is what I used for this cake:

  • 2 batches of marshmallow fondant (see recipe online)
  • pink, red and orange food coloring
  • 1 box Betty Crocker’s milk chocolate cake mix and 1 box chocolate fudge for top 9 in tier
  • 1 box Betty Crocker’s french vanilla cake mix and 1 box strawberry for bottom 10 in tier
  • 2 cake boards
  • buttercream frosting (store bought)
  • pink,  red, orange and white gumballs

For the sake of time I decided to use boxed cake mix and store bought buttercream frosting.  I only had two 9 inch round pans and one 10 inch round.  I made the fondant the night before but I didn’t make the cake ahead of time (my mistake).  I didn’t use any cake decorating tools but now that I know what’s out there I definitely will next time around.  Overall, I was quite satified and the most important part, my goddaughter, Abby, loved her 7th birthday cake!

The Real Housewives of Atlanta's Sheree's birthday cake

Sheree's Louis Vuitton birthday cake

When I first saw this designer purse cake on the Real Housewives of Atlanta show, I remember telling myself,  “Now that’s a cake for the fierce and fabulous!”  It also inspired me to make my very first fondant cake for my friend’s birthday.

Pictures, pictures

I need to post pictures of my cakes.  Although, I’ve only made 2 so far.  No worries, I’m gearing up for quite a few birthdays and a baby shower.  So here we go!
